From reading Coleman's prison stories, I was surprised how much virtue there is in prison, among the vice. Gammas are put down mercilessly, while the truly weak are protected.

Fascinating. That line about a man who "carried a respected name" really hits home with me. It's almost something out of Homer.

I'm glad you seem to be getting somethin' good outta my rant and you're welcome to use it however you like, but you can at least mention me by name once.

"The creator" comes off like a Deebo flex. That make sense? Substack ain't my hustle but even my GED education knows how to toss a few quotation marks where necessary.

I don't think you're staring me down while taking my bike, but just in case I'm being Internet naive, throw me a respect edit.

'preciate ya, good lookin' out in advance.

Sorry, I didn't pay attention to your name. I thought I did block-quote the selected quote, but apparently not. I've fixed it.

That being said, I don't think you need to worry about anyone erroneously thinking that I'm also running a prison recidivism program as well as a publishing company. I don't think our literary styles are that indistinguishable. If you're ever interested in writing a book about what you're doing, feel free to get in touch.

Keep up the good work.

I’ve sponsored many men at AA that would initially look at their drinking as not their fault. They would blame it on their upbringing, on times when they got fucked over, or handed a raw deal. And believe me, some of them got really fucked over in life from very early age. Some of these guys also did time in the joint for everything from arson to vehicular manslaughter. Two of them were inner-city gangbangers that were taught “the life” by male role models while they were in their childhood. When they would make excuses, I would just listen quietly and say, “OK, that was your situation then, but what changes are you making now to not perpetuate the madness that is your current life?” The madness in their life included getting calls all day by bill collectors, if they didn’t get their phone cut off (I always noticed this was the only bill they would almost reliably pay), car repo’d, no driver’s license, can’t see their kids due to restraining orders, and other legal troubles. I would make it clear that although their drinking might not be their fault, their life and actions were their responsibility and no one else’s and they needed to take responsibility for their actions in the now. Some of them got it, but most would just go back to their old ways perpetuating the madness. The ones that really wanted help and really did hit rock bottom were way more salvageable in my experience.

One of my sponsees that almost all the above applied to opened a very successful barber shop in Brooklyn after he was a few months past 4 years sober. When his business took off, I called few bankers I know for him so he could buy the building. The buy went through. The guy who owed over 50K at one point ended up being a millionaire and his criminal record didn’t matter any more. First thing he did was hire a lawyer so he could see his daughter again. After that, he worked his way out of debt slavery and became his own man. The work wasn’t building a business, but was looking in the mirror and not lying to himself about who he was. The work was also looking in the mirror and telling himself who he was and living up to it, no matter how hard for it was for him.

I always see this guy when I’m nearby his shop, but I make sure I have a fresh haircut otherwise he insists on giving me a free one. To this day, after 20 years, he still thinks he owes me. I point to the mirror and remind him that the guy in mirror was the one that did all the hard work, not me.

I feel bad for gammas. Unlike addicts, they haven’t hit rock bottom and haven’t figured out that their actions are the reasons for their pain. When you are in jail, owe everyone and their brother money, or have to go to court every week, it’s way more obvious. But when you get by on fake achievement, confusing everything with dumb questions, and lying to yourself, it is way harder to look in the mirror and be honest about who you really are.

"but I make sure I have a fresh haircut otherwise he insists on giving me a free one."

Sometimes it's generous to let people do an unnecessary thing for you so they can express their gratitude.

Thanks for sharing your story. Good stuff.

The point about no freebies is that he always knows I’m there to see him, not get a free haircut. Long term, it’s the most effective strategy.

This gave me the good kind of chills. The showing up with your hair cut is probably pivotal to this man - showing up for a man without a need just to sjow up. You and your kind are a blessing.

"The point is, things are what they are regardless of your personal opinions and feelings about them."

This reminds me of when someone says 'there is no such thing as truth'

both are highly subjective statements that thirst to be objective.

The sort of people who deny truth often half jokingly argue for solipsism.

There is a refutation for solipsism. It involves having someone else slap you in the face over and over until you acknowledge they exist.

"The point is, things are what they are regardless of your personal opinions and feelings about them."

No, Gamma, the first statement is not subjective.

The annoying thing about you Gammas is that you think you're smart, you posture and pontificate as if you're smart, and then you say obviously stupid and incorrect things.

Expand full comment

This is why they fake achievement. My gamma always stresses credentials, but not wins. He confuses the two. If he does stress wins, he’s lying and taking credit for something that he had very little to do with.

Gammas love jumping through hoops and external validation. They are much like women in this regard.

Arguing with things as they are is what commies, feminists, troons, Gammas, and, apparently, criminals, do. For many of them, a bloody-minded refusal to accept the world as it exists is both their bête noire and their raison d'être.

Real humans accept things as they are and work to change them, if needs must.

In small words, you are the Gamma arguing with what is. You refuse to acknowledge that there even is an "is" for you to accept.

Quite the truths here. I knew from personal experience that an Alpha taking a Gamma under his wing is the only way to correct the Gamma. I never considered what a school designed with that concept in mind would look like.

Expand full comment

Maybe when very young.

What I've observed is that:

Gammas either follow Alphas around like very annoying puppies, trying to get in their good graces, and be cool by association,

or

hate them with the blinding fury of 1000 suns, and try to undermine everything they do (usually after the Alpha tells them off for being annoying)

Either way, the Gamma usually keeps Gamma-ing.

Expand full comment

Yes, when it comes to normal Alpha-Gamma relationships in usual settings. However, if the Alpha's goal is to reform the Gamma, as in the case of the agoge, then it will be more likely to succeed.

Expand full comment

I'd keep in mind two things about that:

First, in the scenario described, even the Alpha alone couldn't do it -- it took the entire pack confronting the individual, which is why the pack was encouraged to do just that, relentlessly.

Second, this took place in a prison where confrontation and aggression where dialed up to maximum allowable limits. Such an aggressive and confrontational "pack" would be hard to find outside of a prison, and would probably ward off any Gammas more surely than a cross would ward off a vampire.

You sort of covered this in the phrase "as in the case of a agoge," but it's worth emphasizing the point, as neither of those conditions would hold for a more normal, civilian-level relationship between an Alpha and a Gamma.

Jim in his comment above hits one of the few means of getting a Gamma to turn around and take a look in the mirror: he hits rock bottom and has to rebuild his life. Modern life is too easy to use as an avoidance mechanism otherwise.

Expand full comment

My observation is the closer one is to reality and nature, the fewer gammas exist. Creating tangible goods, physical work and being exposed to weather hammers down gamma tendencies. Doing real things matter. The more removed from tangible goods and reality the higher the likelihood of gamma hood.

The more rural area; fewest gammas,

I know of zero gamma blacksmiths or farriers.

Towns and suburban areas have more gammas.

Urban areas and large corporations with only office workers even more. Government and university environments the worst.

Generally P&L entities have fewer than non P&L entities

A bit of additional thought and military school used to be able reform bad men back in the day, presumably for the same reason this prison version of the agoge did. I am also reminded of Navy Seal training and Seal teams. There are no excuses allowed there.

Real toxic masculinity is men without strong leadership and accountability. A group of low status men is a terrible sight to behold and can be as big a cancer to an organization as SJWs. Look no further than the enclaves of the low status like reddit. It's disgusting.

A good leader can take the Bad News Bears to the championship. Men who don't tolerate the whining bullsh*t of other men can be a winning group. Once that no-tolerance is in place the other men in the group will shame each other to the good of everyone. I'd take the Dirty Dozen over a group of chickensh*t reddit mods any day.

There's something to be said for criminals: criminals aren't afraid to do shit, to get shit done, and to take great risks to get shit done.

Most I've known weren't bad people, either -- just less respect for rules, especially ones they found retarded or rigging a game in someone else's favor. In a lot of ways, I trust criminals more than the average delta who is deathly afraid of coloring outside the lines.
