That story sounds less credible than a parody. I don't disbelieve it, but still find it hard, in a "reality being stranger than fiction" way.
I know next to nothing about the complex rules of the American Football game, but even I know that the whole point of the sport is that the men playing it successfully better be large and strong in order to dominate the opposition. Sounds like the perfect hire for a head coach whose needs to project authority over a team of really large and strong players.
I could use advice on what to do when a Gamma manages to claw his way up to a medium-high position in your organization (seemingly by relentless flattery of women in the hierarchy and by taking on miserably tedious tasks that no one else would touch 'Over the summer I converted all College forms into spreadsheets').
This person is doing a lot of damage--chasing out high-performers, forcing time-wasting 'data-gathering' everywhere, interfering with important work, calling useless meetings and NEVER SHUTTING UP in them, etc.
Tips very much appreciated. Is it possible to bait someone like this into exceeding his authority and creating a fuck-up that even our clueless administrators can't overlook? Or is it better to ignore him until he goes into frenzy? Or insincerely flatter him to get him to go annoy someone else and just wait for the implosion?
Vrabel is the same size as me. I’m a delta, but the same “he’s intimidating” crap has been thrown at me too. Part of that is my voice is deep and I can project it well. I’m also told I’m big and scare people. There’s a reason almost all alphas are big guys, you get people’s attention, and you can make sure they heard you.
That explains what's wrong with FedGov as well. We have a gamma man in the White House, A gamma man as DHHS director, a gamma man in charge of the military.
Yes, Alpha's are big, they are intimidating, and they lead by example.
Most of gen Z and the military currently are gammas. Unfortunately DEI has ruined the ranks and forced out those with actual principles outside themselves and feelings
Joe Biden is way too perverted to be a mere Gamma male. He may have very well been an Alpha in his heyday, how else to climb the slippery pole of federal party politics.
As Vox keeps pointing out, there is no morality attached to the SSH. An Alpha isn't a "better man" than a Bravo or a Delta in any ethical sense of "The Good". Vox even has identified Hunter Biden to be a straight up Sigma male, as broken and as perverted as Hunter is, too (and his father may very well be at fault, God only knows what happened in that family when Hunter as a small boy).
Except perhaps Gamma, because lying to oneself and to others is inherent in that behavioural pattern.
A similar situation played out with Jerry Krause a GM of the Bulls and Jordan as his star. Then Jordan (and also Pippen) didn't help matters by openly mocking him. If you watch The Last Dance Krause' decision to focus on rebuilding in Jordans last season there seem mystifying untill you apply the same filter as the vrabel situation. Krause couldn't control Jordan and was intimidated by him so he wanted him gone.
The timing of this is great for me. Just this morning, I was thinking about an ex-boss of mine and said to myself: that dude is a Gamma and that explains why the organization was so dysfunctional. The dude got the position almost by accident during a time when our company was being acquired. An accountant by training, he was put in charge of a sales organization and the fit was awful. He took a divide-and-conquer approach to "leadership" trying to pit his senior leaders against each other (myself included). He was passive-aggressive in conflict and if pressed, would explode in angry outbursts. As a Divisional leader, I was responsible for the growth and management of my group and had stellar results and as a result, kept getting knocked down his pecking order. I didn't care really because I was on a comp plan and my compensation was performance-based and the people that mattered to me knew the real deal. Until the "pandemic" happened and he saw an opportunity to squash me since I would not get the experimental injection. I was excluded from high-level meetings and could not attend in person the closing of a deal that I spent two years chasing and landing. That's when I found another position and left. Since then the company has cratered and my division specifically has scattered to the wind. My advice: when faced with a Gamma boss, find another position.
Vox's rule to check whether managers use "we" more than "I" when setting direction is a great tool. A lot of female managers, especially those hired to achieve "Managing Director gender diversity ratios" tend to refer to the "we" of the "team", also. Demanding "accountability" from everyone else but themselves (which is illogical: the team are responsible for their work delivery, yes, but it is their manager who literally is accountable for all of their work).
What kind of SSH type is the opposite of a gamma? E.G. like what kind of normal or small-sized guy has a natural affinity for big dudes? Big guys--like big dogs, relative to small dogs, are generally way cooler to be around. They’re easier to work with, better to work for, and are at least not discernibly worse to have reporting up to you. They can reach tall shelves, and carry their end of something heavy. Usually better energy, usually better disposition.
lol! Wanting a big guy on your side is the DEFAULT. Imagine choosing men for your football team and agonizing over what type of person you'd have to be to want the biggest, strongest and fastest men. It's as absurd as asking, ''What sort of person wants their wife to be hot?? Guys I'm confused???"
The sober answer is that it wasn't about the guy's bigness, it was about the gamma's insecurities. It could have easily been that he rejected the guy because he was smarter, he was better dressed, he was more charismatic, he had better family connections. All that mattered was that gamma felt personally intimidated by it.
Lol 😂 I had a chihuahua terrier mix that liked big dogs. They were fun to play around with and run with. He tended not to like dogs his own size because they yapped at him
I've literally never been intimidated by someone's size that I know unless they're making active, aggressive moves against me. I can't imagine being so - and I'm not an alpha, definitely in a Bravo category, 5'10, 180 lbs, so average height / weight.
Work in trades with plenty both larger, sometimes more aggressive, but I can tell you aggression doesn't equal Alpha. It just makes them a pain to deal with. A delta can be aggressive at times and someone to avoid because you don't know when they'll go off because they keep it locked up, where bravos will speak up.
I'm definitely more comfortable around Alphas, even if bigger, because they speak their minds. Its psychopaths and sociopaths you have to look out for, and they come in all shapes and sizes. I don't care what their weight, but you get a feel for them that something's off when you meet them.
Alphas are chill or high energy depending on personality, easy to conform to. You either go with the flow, watch the show, or get out of the way - there's no conflict unless you make it one.
How can you be indifferent? Size really matters for most things. Sometimes it’s a major impediment, like if you’re working in the hills or in a tunnel or up on ladders. Almost always matters physically, but also seems predictive of disposition.
Indifferent as far as "intimidation". I can see the Alpha and Sigma being completely indifferent to size/build as far as their place in the SSH or the org. Bravos and Deltas for that matter as well, if that person finds a productive role in the hierarchy. The leaders who are leaders will make sure that person finds the right spot, but won't be intimidated by them personally, i.e. indifferent. The Gamma is going to Love/Hate on them vice being Indifferent.

Austin is a solid Delta.
bobo: What anti-semitism? You are imagining things that don't exist. What are you scared of?
Sorry, I didn't know I needed the /sarc.
Need to lower my bar.
Cool it with the anti-semitism....

Yes, his golem started misbehaving...

Ah yes, I know the type.

Lambda, perhaps?

Big vertically, not horizontally 😉

In that case, it's your own damn fault.
And you deserve the consequences
Written like a true Delta!
Following an alpha, getting the work DONE, can't be intimidated BY an/their alpha!!
But yeah, has little to do with physical size!
"What type would be *indifferent* to the size of the big guy" might be a more pertinent question.
