Had my nieces and nephews over recently. And 9 year old nephew was smack dab in the middle of learning/practicing this. He got a bad burn on his leg from a fire pit, and also had a huge crush on the 10 year old girl across the street. He came to me, his aunt, with tears in his eyes and I helped him cool the burn, got cream, bandage etc. But every time his crush came upstairs to check on him, and give him a feel better card, which was like three time over the course of twenty minutes, he’d wipe the tears away real quick and out in his stoic face.
Watching him struggle in real time with being a little boy needing comfort with me, and a trying to be a young man with the girl he liked was really lovely, and fascinating, as I don’t have boy children of my own that age yet.
I cried a bit at my mother's funeral. She was a good one, and we miss her.
