I know it really just refers to busting your chops, maybe with a prank added in. I’m curious to know the difference between this real life example a and the Clown World depiction.
Nowadays hazing can easily simple consequences. It's also somewhat of an initiation to a group of friends that aren't losers like your current friend group. I'm sure it can go overboard sometimes but sometimes it's as simple as making a fat kid do pushups and he cries to an adult who sticks up for him so he can get diabetes young. If he would have taken the hazing on as a challenge he would have built muscle and been far healthier and probably hung around a higher caliber of people.

It does often include a power dynamic within an existing hierarchy, so Gammas hate it and overzealous Alphas and Bravos or Alpha-pretenders may be prone to abuse it. It can absolutely smoke out a person's character and status as it symbolizes subordination to the Alpha or to the hierarchy structure itself, so resistance to the hazing usually means the hazing is intensified. An Alpha taking over will go through a more symbolic hazing that is void of any element of humiliation and more akin to an anointing.
