You have just supplied me with the BEST justification for spending an obscene amount of money on Dark Chocolate 🍫which is becoming a bit of an annoying yet delicious scene in Paris - Merci. 🙏🏾 Also now my husband is running again I’m going to start drugging him with chocolate, see if that helps his knee complaints!
Agreeing and sharing my observation. Cacao powder + Pomegranate/beet juice mixed in a glass few times a week. That's what I'm hearing recently from industry-unfriendly doctors. Let's say I'm seeing better days in bed (with sleep & beyond). Good enough for me even if it's not at VD's athletic level.
I've started doing the same, but with nonalkalized cacao. It's more bitter, but has more of the flavinoids and theobromine provide the energy and health benefits.
I mix 1 cup quality sugar, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract together, then mix in 1/3 cup azure cocoa powder and store in a jar for making hot chocolate/chocolate milk/mochas. That is a child friendly level of sugar. You can use less.
for chocolate milk I add a little boiled water to the coco mix to dissolve, then pour in raw milk.
At 48 and an ex-colligate athlete, and being abnormally tall, keeping muscle weight and mobility high are factors that have helped me stay fit into middle age and beyond (God willing). Never stop moving, working, competing. If you stop and look around, you can see future ambulatory issues in your age cohort, let alone in those who are older. Set goals, eat dark chocolate, and move!
This is very interesting to me as I am turning 66 next month. Maintaing a high level of strength and fitness is an important goal of mine and articals like this are very encouraging.
Thanks, Vox. This is incredibly valuable. To add my own anecdote in support, I blew my knee out in a skiing accident two years ago. Never got surgery. Was largely inactive until I moved and returned to Muay Thai earlier this year and around the same time started putting a tablespoon of pure cocoa nibs in my morning coffee.
4 months in and the torn ligaments/meniscus are close to a non-issue. No issues with movement, and I switch stance, cut angles, and explode to cover distance a lot. It did buckle once on a low kick that landed right on the knee, but it bounced right back and was able to continue. Sore for a few days after, but otherwise functional.
I can't help but think a lifetime of athleticism is a major factor in why so many GenX look younger than their parents at this age. Started going to the chiropractor this year and it's helped tremendously. Definitely not a chocolate person, but it's worth a try. Thanks Vox!
Good News comrades! The chocolate ration as been increased to 5 grams!
Seriously though, I gave up chocolate and caffeine a few months ago. Now I'm wondering if that's the reason I seem to be in a plateau. Easy and enjoyable enough to test.

Even if that coin toss has better odds than this study.
I'll happily supplement with some good dark chocolate.
Espresso after midnight! Surely the negative impact on sleep counteracts any longevity benefits from the cocoa! 😂😅🤣🤣

I'll start adding cocoa powder to my post workout shake. See how this goes for recovery over time.
I’m ready for the Supreme Cocoa crowdfund. Pod husks for the throne.

This might be your greatest contribution, Vox. Thank you for posting this before the weekend. I have some dark chocolate to eat after my rare steak.
Nobody has to twist my arm to try this! Certainly beats apple cidar vinegar.
I do enjoy a few dark chocolate chips after dinner. I better make that after every meal.
I don't think I'll attempt an espresso after midnight. Vox, do you sleep?

Chocolate > surgery.

Don't throw me in that briar patch!
